ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team closed out its non-conference slate with a 6-3 win over UC Santa Cruz on Friday at the Anderson Tennis Center. The Panthers improved to 4-5 and won their second in a row heading into the SCIAC schedule.
The Panthers bottom of the lineup clinched the win for Chapman. The Panthers took the initial lead after a pair of doubles wins. Olivia Desso and Lucy Erickson grabbed the edge with an 8-7 win at No. 2 while Sydney La and Jaya Manhas grabbed an 8-4 win at No. 3.
The Slugs earned straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 in singles but La won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6. The final three matches went to a third set to decide the match. Lily Kresser and Brooke Waite each won their first sets and dropped the second. Both rebounded to win the third set and grab the clinching points for the points.
Fhima rebounded from a first set tiebreaker loss to take the next two sets and finish up the victory for Chapman.
The Panthers take on Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday as they open up SCIAC play in a 1 p.m. match.
