ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team clinched the final spot in next week's SCIAC Tournament with an 80-67 win over La Verne on Saturday. The Panthers improved to 9-6 in the SCIAC and 15-9 overall.
The Panthers' win, coupled with Redlands' win over Occidental, clinched the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Chapman will face top-seeded Cal Lutheran in Friday's semifinals.
Blakely Stoughton poured in a career-best 34 points to go along with eight rebounds and an assist. He was 14-of-26 in the game and shot 6-for-10 from three-point range.
McKelary Robertson scored 22 points with three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Christian Bood added 14 points off the bench.
Chapman has won three of its last four games down the stretch of the regular season to pull away from Occidental and Redlands for the final spot in the tournament.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season with a trip to Redlands on Tuesday before heading to Cal Lutheran on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff in the SCIAC Semifinal.
