Chapman Men's Water Polo Punches Ticket to SCIAC Championship

CLAREMONT, Calif.— One goal made the difference for the Panthers between heading home and playing for the SCIAC Championship.

In defeating No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer 14-13, No. 3 Chapman punched its ticket to the SCIAC title game on Saturday against Redlands.

The Panthers came storming back in the final period of play, putting away four goals, while keeping Pomona-Pitzer to just two in the final minutes of play. Chapman's Christian Gotterup scored the final goal match-goal with just one minute 22 seconds to play.

Defensively, the Panthers earned one final steal as the Sagehens sprinted down the pool to get one final shot attempt off with timing winding down.

Chapman's Nate Randolph recorded five goals, while Gotterup recorded three of his own. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jackson Sanders recorded 11 saves on the day.

The Panthers made history, punching their very first ticket to the SCIAC title game, with hopes of going on to win their first SCIAC Championship in school history. No matter the outcome in the title game, the Panthers will compete in the D-III Championships Dec. 7-8. Before that, Chapman will face off against University of Redlands on Saturday in the SCIAC Tournament Championship.
