Volleyball drops five-setter to Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team came out on the wrong end of a five-set thriller, falling to visiting Redlands. The seesaw match finished at 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-13 as Chapman fell to 6-7 and 1-2 in the SCIAC.

Brooke Leslie had 18 kills and Olivia Harrison had 12 kills to lead the Panthers. Five different Panthers reached double digits in digs, led by 21 from Olivia Sampson.

After dropping the first set, the Panthers rolled through sets two and three to take the advantage in the match. Chapman hit .255 in the second set and .355 in the third, committing just one hitting error in 31 swings in the third.

The teams battled back and forth early in the fourth but the Panthers eventually took a 10-8 advantage as they looked to seal the match. Redlands was determined to send it to a fifth set behind a long run from Kaitlyn DeLong. DeLong hit the kill to sideout for the Bulldogs and then served eight consecutive points to put Redlands up 17-10.

The Panthers battled in the fifth but committed four unforced errors in the set to give Redlands the upper hand. Ultimately, Chapman hit .000 and Redlands took full advantage to go up 11-8. Chapman scored three of the next four points to pull back within one but Redlands was able to close it out and get the five-set win.

Chapman heads to nationally-ranked CMS on tomorrow for a 4 p.m. match but return to the Hutton Sports Center on Tuesday to take on Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m.
