ORANGE, Calif. – Jackson Sanders broke a two decade old school record to lead the Chapman University water polo team to a 11-10 win over Division II Biola on Saturday. Sanders made 21 saves in the match as the Panthers pulled off an 11-10 overtime win to end the first day of the Gary Troyer Tournament.
Thatcher Lytel scored the game-winner in the second sudden death period to send the Panthers home as the winners. Lytel was straight on, rose out of the water from seven meters and quickly beat the Biola keeper to the lower right corner for the game-winner.
The goal was Lytel's second of the match and second in a clutch moment. With less than 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter it was Lytel that pushed the game-tying goal into the cage after the initial shot was deflected by the Biola keeper.
Nate Randolph scored three times to lead the Panthers while Christian Gotterup and Everett Prussak each scored twice.
Sanders was magnificent in goal as he broke now assistant coach BJ Ploessel's single match record of 20 goals. Sanders 21st came in the biggest of moments as he saved a 5-meter shot in overtime to set up the heroics for Lytel. Both keepers saved 5-meter shots in overtime as neither would let their team falter.
The Panthers fell 24-2 earlier in the day to UCSD and will wrap up the Gary Troyer Tournament tomorrow with two games in Claremont, Calif. Chapman takes on Johns Hopkins at 8 a.m. before facing another Division III opponent, Augustana, at 2:40 p.m.
