Women's basketball extends win streak to five

ORANGE, Calif. – Five Panthers scored in double figures as the Chapman University women's basketball team captured an 87-70 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. The Panthers broke the game open in the fourth quarter to mover to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC.

Maile Nakaji led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points, including a halftime buzzer beater from the three-point line. It was her second time beating a quarter-ending buzzer in as many games. Layla Woods recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds to go along with three steals. Aidan Sherfey was also just shy of a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Trinity Barretto scored 11 points while Zoe Zurasky scored 14 points with three assists. Emily Lee's 18 points led Pomona-Pitzer.

The Panthers fell behind when Pomona-Pitzer scored on the opening possession but tied it up with two free throws from Sherfey just 17 seconds later and never trailed again. The Panthers held a lead for 38 of the 40 minutes in the game to win their fifth game in a row.

Chapman went on to build a 23-16 lead in the opening quarter but the Sagehens stayed within striking distance as the lead stayed at seven points at halftime and at the end of the third quarter. The lead was in single digits after a three-pointer from Lee at the midway point of the fourth quarter but a 9-1 run over the next two-plus minutes but Chapman up 79-62 with less than three minutes to go.

The Panthers had their best three-point shooting night of the season, hitting 7-of-14 three-point attempts and outrebounded the Sagehens 46-28.

The Panthers play their next two games on the road at Cal Lutheran on Saturday and Caltech next Wednesday before returning home on Jan. 13 to take on La Verne at 4 p.m.
