THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – In the first SCIAC Surf Division game for the Chapman University football team, the Panthers fell 24-21 on the road at Cal Lutheran. Chapman dropped to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in the SCIAC.
The Panthers were up 14-3 early in the second quarter when Gio Ursino punched in a touchdown from one yard out but were trailing seven minutes later. The Kingsmen responded with a touchdown on their next drive to cut the lead to 14-10.
On their next drive, the Panthers lined up on fourth down to try and push across the first down marker with less than a yard to go. Instead, a false start pushed the Panthers back and CLU blocked the punt on fourth and six, recovering the ball in the end zone to go up 17-14.
Chapman's next drive stalled near midfield but the defense forced a three-and-out from Cal Lutheran to get the ball back with 1:47 left. The Panthers took another blow when Nathaniel Espinoza was carted off after he was tackled on the first play of the drive. Tyler Pacheco took over at quarterback and marched the Panthers down to the Cal Lutheran 31 but a last second field goal fell just short.
The Kingsmen opened the second half with a seven and a half minute drive that ended with a 2-yard run from Dylan Turner to go up 24-14. Chapman marched back down the field but a missed field goal ended the 12-play, six-and-a-half minute drive with no points.
Chapman came up with a fourth down stop to end Cal Lutheran's next drive and Pacheco ran in a 1-yard TD to cap a 17-play, 77-yard drive and cut the lead down to 24-21. However, the Kingsmen were able to convert a couple of first downs to run out the clock and end Chapman's 10-game win streak over Cal Lutheran.
Gio Ursino ran the ball 18 times for 85 yards to lead the Chapman offense. Amir Adams had five catches for 71 yards and Pacheco ran for 66 yards on eight carries. The Panthers had 196 rushing yards and outgained the Kingsmen 328 yards to 320 yards..
All three Chapman touchdowns came on the ground from Espinoza, Ursino and Pacheco.
The Panthers are back home next week to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m. in another SCIAC Surf Division matchup.
