FOREST GROVE, Ore. – It took lightning and rain to slow down a dominant effort from the Chapman University football team in its season-opener at Pacific. The Panthers led 24-0 when a lightning strike caused the initial postponement of the game.
Lightning in the area caused the game to stop with 10:20 remaining in the third quarter, prompting the game to be declared a no contest. As a no contest, no stats will not count from the Panthers' trip up to the Pacific Northwest.
Through the first 35 minutes of the game, the Panthers were dominant on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Chapman scored three touchdowns on 213 rushing yards with Ken Baierl hitting a field goal just before halftime for a 24-0 lead.
Three sacks and eight total tackles for loss held Pacific to negative rushing yardage. The defense forced a turnover on downs on Pacific's only trip into the red zone to keep the Boxers off the board.
Chapman will have its bye next week before hosting Whitworth on Sep. 16 at 7 p.m. in Chapman Stadium.
