ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball team outlasted MSOE 62-52 to improve to 2-0 on its three-game post-finals. The Panthers improved to 5-3 on the season with the win.
Maile Nakaji led the Panthers with 12 points off the bench, knocking down a trio of three-pointers. Layla Woods had 10 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists while Shanna Brown grabbed eight rebounds.
The Panthers' bench put up 27 points to out pace the 12 from MSOE's reserves. A flurry of turnovers came on both sides with Chapman turning the ball over 24 times and the Raiders committing 22 turnovers.
Chapman built a 15-point just before halftime but saw the lead cut down to two by the end of the third quarter. The Raiders took a 47-46 lead on three-pointer from Nina Perl but Brown put the Panthers back on top just over one minute later and the Panthers never trailed again. Brown's basket sparked a 9-1 run over a four-minute span to put the Panthers in control late.
MSOE attempted 32 free throws in the game while the Panthers had just four free throw attempts until the final minute. Halena Hill led the Raiders with 12 points while Raekyiah Williams recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Panthers complete back-to-back-to-back stretch with a noon matinee against Whitworth tomorrow in the Hutton Sports Center.
