ORANGE, Calif. – A five-set battle went to the visitors as the Chapman University women's volleyball team dropped a midweek SCIAC contest to Whittier. The Panthers claimed the first and fourth sets but ultimately fell 18-25, 25-15, 25-21, 11-25, 15-9.
The Panthers were dominant in flashes. They rolled out to an early lead in the first and put the fourth set away in a hurry. However, Whittier returned the favor in the third and fourth sets and pulled away in the fifth to grab the win.
Marly Johnson led the Panthers with 15 kills on .279 hitting while Olivia Sampson recorded 14 kills. Hannah Callahan had eight kills on 19 swings without an error to hit .421. Six Panthers were in double figures for digs, including Sampson and Johnson. Clara Cronin led with 25 digs for Chapman.
As a team, the Panthers the Panthers hit .144 but limited Whittier to .122 hitting. The Poets missed just three serves all night while Chapman missed eight.
Chapman did not make an attacking error in the first set a the Panthers hit .349 to open the match and take the first set convincingly. However, the Panthers responded by in the negatives in the second set as Whittier knotted the match at one set apiece.
The third set was the only tightly contested set of the night with 18 ties and six lead changes. The other four sets combined for four ties and one lead change. With the teams tied 20-20 in the third, Riley DeGroot knocked down back-to-back kills to take a two-point lead for Whittier. Julin Kenison responded but a couple of miscues from the Panthers gave the Poets the final two points and a 2-1 edge in the match.
The Panthers rolled again in the fourth led by five kills from Julin Kenison and three each from Johnson and Sampson. Chapman rattled off the first seven points of the set and cruised to send the match into a fifth set. The Panthers hit .242 in the set while holding Whittier to -.116 for the exclamation point win.
In the fifth, Whittier built an initial 5-2 lead and didn't let up. The Poets were able to sideout on 8-of-9 tries and hit .533 to take the match and the much needed SCIAC victory.
Chapman fell to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in the SCIAC while Whittier improved to 7-8 and 9-2 in the SCIAC. The Panthers head to Caltech on Friday but will be back home next Tuesday to take on Occidental at 7 p.m.
