ORANGE, Calif. – Andrea Aldama lifted the Chapman University women's soccer to a much-needed three points with a last-minute goal to defeat visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 1-0. The Panthers kept their positioning in fourth place in the SCIAC standing heading into the final week of the season.
Over the first 89 minutes, the two teams stayed scoreless with the Panthers holding a slight 11-8 advantage in shots. Despite the shot advantage, CMS had controlled the majority of the possession in the match. Aaliyah Bustamante made four saves in goal for the Panthers and Sadie Brown had made five.
The Panthers gained an advantage in the 70th minute when CMS' Emma Fogg was shown a straight red card for denying Jenna Urrabazo a goal-scoring opportunity. Despite being a player down, CMS battled and pushed forward in search of the go-ahead goal.
Chapman was able to win a goal kick in the air in the 90th minute to set up the game-winner, Alyssa Hernandez knocked the bouncing ball behind the back line with her knee for Aldama to run on. Aldama won a race to the ball, just touched it past the keeper and rolled it into the side netting for the game's only goal.
With the win, the Panthers are up to 15 points in the SCIAC standings at 4-3-3 and sit in fourth place – just one point behind the Athenas and four points in front of Whittier.
The Panthers conclude the regular season with a home match against Redlands on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and a road match at Cal Lutheran next Saturday. A win in either game will clinch a SCIAC Tournament berth for the Panthers.
