ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo eight-match win streak was snapped with a 15-14 overtime loss to Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday. Daniel Franks beat the final buzzer to force overtime but the Panthers ultimately fell for the first time since Sep. 27.
Nate Randolph had five goals to lead the Panthers while Everett Prussak had three. Tanner McMillen made 15 saves in goal.
Every quarter ended with the game tied as the two teams matched each other step for step. The Panthers led 3-2 early on before Indigo Lee tied up the match with 14 seconds left in the first. Pomona-Pitzer jumped ahead in the second but Prussak scored the final goal of the quarter to make it 5-5 at halftime.
The Sagehens opened the third quarter with a 4-1 run to go up 9-6 but the Panthers scored three times over the final 95 seconds to tie up the match again heading into the fourth.
The teams traded goals in the fourth with Kyle Green's goal with 2:51 to go putting Pomona-Pitzer up 12-11. Both teams stood strong on defense and the Panthers wound up with the final possession in the last 10 seconds. An errant pass forced Franks to pick up the ball and shoot as quickly as he could. With the final buzzer sounding, his shot floated over an outstretched arm and into the back of the net to tie the match at 12-12.
Chapman took its first lead since the first quarter on its first possession of the overtime period as Spencer Snow found the back of the net but Green scored the next two goals for Pomona-Pitzer to put the Sagehens back on top. Another goal from Maxim Koretsky put the Sagehens up 15-13 with 1:26 to go.
Drake MacNichols added a late goal for Chapman before Pomona-Pitzer ran out the clock.
The Panthers continue a crucial stretch of their schedule with a trip to Redlands on Saturday before returning home on Wednesday to take on Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m.
