ORANGE, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after suffering a heartbreaking sudden death overtime loss, the Chapman University men's water polo team bounced back in impressive fashion, defeating the Occidental Tigers, 16-6 on Saturday at the Allred Olympic Pool. The Panthers offensive outburst was a result of a varied attack that featured 11 different players scoring goals in the contest.
The Panthers came out firing, opening up a 5-1 lead over the Tigers in the first six minutes on goals from four different players. Sophomore utility Willis Allen led the way for Chapman, scoring twice in the opening period to give the Panthers a 5-2 lead.
Two more Panthers got in on the scoring action in the second quarter as Chapman jumped out to 7-3 lead. Junior driver Mark Alvarado and senior utility Kyle Troiano each posted a goal in the final three minutes to give the Panthers a comfortable cushion entering halftime.
Chapman pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 4-1 thanks to two goals from junior utility Jake Gross. The Panthers put the game on ice in the fourth quarter as senior driver Jack Cutler scored two of Chapman's five goals to seal the victory.
No. 5 seed Chapman will wrap up the season tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. as they take on No. 6 Cal Lutheran in the fifth place match.
