CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team went 2-2 over the weekend at the Claremont Convergence Tournament, but a pair of overtime losses against Pomona-Pitzer and George Washington kept the team from winning all four matches.
The tournament began for Chapman (9-10) with a 17-14 overtime loss to Pomona-Pitzer, Division III's top-ranked team. Sophomore driver Jack Cutler led the way for Chapman with four goals while freshman driver Mark Alvarado had a team-high five assists. Junior goalie Taylor Roszkos had 15 saves in the game which was the most he had in the tournament.
Later in the afternoon the Panthers squeaked out a 16-15 win over Fresno Pacific in the third match between the two teams this season. All three matches between FPU and Chapman have been closely contested with Chapman winning all three and the difference has not been more than two goals. Alvarado had five goals and three steals while senior David Carson had five assists and freshman driver Chase Middlesworth added four goals and four assists.
On Saturday the Panthers lost a triple overtime thriller 16-15 to George Washington University. Alvarado for the second game in a row had a team-high five goals. He tallied 14 goals, nine assists and eight steals over the weekend.
The Panthers closed out the tournament with an 18-9 win over Connecticut College. Goalies Randy Rosales and Erik Murata combined for nine saves while holding Connecticut to nine scores.
