ORANGE, Calif. - High-scoring innings have been a
trademark of the Chapman University baseball team in 2009 and
Sunday night's 10-8 victory over Hendrix College (Ark.) at Hart
Park was no different as the Panthers scored eight second-inning
runs en route to the win.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Panthers responded
with an eight-run, nine-hit inning off of Warrior sophomore starter
Jordan Suydam. Thirteen Panthers came to the plate
in the inning, highlighted by a three-run homer to center by
sophomore OF/P John Semel (his seventh), and a
two-run double by junior IF Halston Barcelo.
Hendrix (6-10) answered back with two runs in the top of the
third off of Chapman's freshman RHP Richard
Matamoros to narrow the lead to 8-3. With Matamoros
struggling with his control having given up a single and two walks,
senior OF Daniel Ward came up with a bases-loaded
RBI groundout followed by a run-scoring single from senior OF
Matt Giza.
Chapman (12-5) added runs in the fourth and sixth innings to
push the lead to 10-3. Matamoras (2-0) pitched three consecutive
scoreless innings after the third but ran into some trouble in the
seventh inning as Hendrix sophomore IF Jeff
Forgeson hit a solo homer to right. The Warriors added one
more run in the seventh narrowing the Panthers lead to 10-5.
Matamoras pitched six innings while allowing five runs and six
hits.
Hendrix added three runs in the eighth but could not rally in
the ninth as the Panthers held on for the 10-8 victory. Semel
pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.
With the victory, the Panthers are now 7-0 when scoring 10 runs
or more and have won seven of their last eight ballgames.
