ORANGE, Calif. - A season-high 14 different players scored a
goal for the Chapman University men's water polo team as the
Panthers cruised to a 22-6 win over California Institute of
Technology at the Allred Aquatics Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Chapman's win pushed its record to 10-9 and back over the .500 mark
for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
After a 20-minute delay to start the game, the Panthers didn't
delay in scoring its first goal against Caltech as senior utility
Alex Mulé got Chapman on the board with
just over a minute gone by in the first quarter. Chapman built its
lead to 3-0 on goals by junior utility Steve
Neville and Mulé before Caltech got its first goal
by their junior captain Paul Fleiner making the
score 3-1. After four consecutive goals by the Panthers, Fleiner
added his second goal for Caltech bringing the score to 8-2.
With an 8-2 lead, Chapman ran off six-consecutive goals over the
final few minutes of the second quarter and early stages of the
third quarter highlighted by junior utility Derek
Yegan's first goal of the season. Caltech (0-6) narrowed
the score to 14-3 on a goal by sophomore D Adam
Kahn. After two Chapman goals, Kahn connected again for
the Beavers as time expired in the third quarter bringing the score
to 16-4.
The fourth quarter was highlighted by freshman driver
Colin DeMartini's first career goal and three
goals from senior Matt Cullen which doubled his
season total. Freshmen Ross Harper and
Chris Humphreys also added fourth quarter goals.
Chapman goalies Randy Rosales and Ryan
Huffman combined for five blocks in the win. For Caltech,
Kahn and Fleiner each had three goals.
