NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Chapman University women's soccer team finished up its season-opening road trip with a pair of losses in Virginia. The Panthers lost 2-0 to Batten University on Friday and 1-0 to nationally-ranked Christopher Newport on Sunday.
Friday's match against Batten included an hour-long weather delay. Just minutes into the match, lightning forced the teams off the field until the storm passed. Batten scored late in the first half and then added the insurance goal in the 87th minute.
Sienna Gomez made 10 saves against Christopher Newport on Sunday to keep the Panthers in the match. The Captains scored in the 27th minute and fired off 21 shots but Gomez kept the insurance goal from hitting the back of the net. The Panthers generated some opportunities with nine of their 12 shots in the second half but could not find the equalizer.
The Panthers return home to play Whittier in a non-conference matchup at 9 a.m. on Sep. 12 and play their home-opener Sep. 16 against Caltech.
