Game Recap: Softball |

Softball drops doubleheader to Redlands

The Panthers celebrated their five seniors before the start of the first game.

ORANGE Calif. – The Chapman University softball dropped both games of a doubleheader against visiting Redlands, 1-0 and 14-3. The Panthers celebrated their five seniors before the final home doubleheader of the season: Rose Malen, Shea Higa, Mia Reyes, Taylor Cruz and Kristy Kitabayashi.

Game 1 – L. 1-0

A classic pitcher's duel opened the day as Rose Malen was magnificent in the circle. Two Bulldog pitchers were able to keep the Panthers scoreless to extend Redlands' win streak to 21 games and clinch the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament.

Malen allowed just three hits, struck out seven and walked just one. She faced the minimum through the first five innings but two of those three hits were strung together in the sixth for the games' only run. Avery Provenzano tripled to open the inning and Brooklyn Bard dropped a bloop single off the end of the bat into left field to cash in the run.

Chapman had six hits, led by a pair from Shea Higa, but could not find a way to scratch one across for a run.

Defense was on display as both teams had runners erased at the plate. Chapman had a runner thrown out at home to end the third. Malen and catcher Jordyn Balingit caught Bard trying to extend the lead with a delayed steal of home to end the sixth. Kristy Kitabayashi also caught Redlands' first baserunner trying to stretch a single into a double in the fifth.

Game 2- L, 14-3

Redlands completed the sweep with an offensive outburst in the final game, scoring 14 runs on 17 hits.

Chapman scored twice in the third to tie the game at 2-2 as Mia Reyes scored on an error and Katie Miyasato came through with a bases loaded infield single to tie the game.

The Bulldogs responded right away with a pair of runs in the fourth and then pushed across five in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Chapman finishes up the season with a three-game series against Whittier, starting with the final home game of the season on Friday at 3 p.m. One Chapman win in the series will clinch a spot in the SCIAC Tournament and a sweep will secure the No. 2 seed.
