Baseball drops series opener to CMS

Joey Capobianco had three hits and Chapman pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team dropped the series-opener to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-0 on Friday at Hart Park. The bullpen threw four scoreless innings but the offense never got going in the loss.

Joey Cpobianco had three hits for the Panthers but the rest of the lineup followed with just one additional hit as the Panthers were shut out for the first time this year.

Chapman's three pitchers combined to strikeout Stag hitters 13 times but the Stags put up a run in first, one more in the second and an insurance run in the fifth. For the most part, Chapman starter Graham Stogner and relievers, Ryan Iveson and Finean Hunter-Kenney, were able to limit the Stag offense.

Stogner struck out six over five innings and allowed just one earned run of the three that crossed the plate. Iveson struck out a pair in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Hunter-Kenney followed with two more scoreless innings, striking out five in his six-out appearance.

The series shifts to Claremont, Calif. on Saturday for a doubleheader to finish off the three-game series.
