ORANGE, Calif. – Annika Carlson and Mason Fara made program history, becoming the first Panthers to be selected as the SCIAC Track Athletes of the Year. Jesse McMillan also became the second Panther to earn the Dixon Farmer Award for men's track & field.
Carlson and Fara combined for five first-place finishes and six trips up the podium to lead the Chapman track & field teams through a successful SCIAC Championship meet.
Carlson earned the hat trick of SCIAC golds, winning all three events she raced in over the weekend. She won the steeplechase for the third time in her career on Saturday, before adding to her collection of medals with wins in the 1500m and the 5k on Saturday. She holds the school record in all three events, setting the 5k record at the SCIAC Championships.
Fara repeated as the SCIAC champion in both the 200m and 400m, lowering his school record in both events during his championship runs. His 46.55 in the 400m was nearly two second faster than the second place finisher and ranks second in Division III. His winning time of 21.09 in the 200m also ranks seventh nationally. Fara was also a member of the third place 4x100m relay and fourth place 4x400m relay.
Carlson, for women's track & field, and Fara, for men's track & field, are the first in Chapman's history to win a Track Athlete of the Year honor in track & field, following teammate Isaac Robin's Field Athlete of the Year award last year.
McMillan became Chapman's second Dixon Farmer Awar winner. The Dixon Farmer Award is presented to a senior student-athlete who best exemplifies the conference's high ideals including ability, leadership, determination, sportsmanship and sincerity of academic pursuit.
All three Chapman major award winners are in firm position to compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the end of the month.
