Softball finishes series sweep of Pomona-Pitzer

The Panthers jumped into first place and improved to 19-4 overall.

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team kept rolling and finished off a series sweep of Pomona-Pitzer with wins of 7-0 and 5-3 on Saturday. The Panthers r=improved to 19-4 on the season and 7-2 in the SCIAC, taking hold of first place in the standings.

Game 1 – W, 7-0

Rose Malen tossed her fourth shutout of the season to clinch the series for the Panthers. She scattered five singles and struck out seven to dip her ERA back below 1.00. Malen cruised through the first six innings but pitched through a seventh inning jam when a single and two hit batters loaded the bases with one out.

A line drive came right back at Malen, which she gloved and fired over to third for a game-ending double play.

Chapman score two in the second and three in the fourth to build a 5-0 lead. Grace Fosselman put the Panthers on the board with a run-scoring double in the second and Miranda Murphy added one with a sacrifice sly two batters later.

Murphy ended the game with a pair of RBIs. Ilianna Serna capped the fourth with a two-run single into left that padded the lead to 5-0.

Game 2 – W, 5-3

Chapman completed the three-game series sweep with the 5-3 victory in game two behind another solid start from Jillian Kelly. She improved to 10-0 on the year with another complete game victory.

The first batter of the game left the yard as Kylie Liu led off with a solo home run but Kelly settled in. She retired the next seven in order to allow Chapman to take the lead. In total, she allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven to earn the victory.

Jojo Westerfield responded for Chapman as she tied the game at 1-1 with a clutch two-out single in the first to bring in Miranda Murphy. In the third, she drove in two more when her chopper kicked off the glove of the diving shortstop and rolled away for a two-RBI double.

Pomona-Pitzer knotted the game back at 3-3 in the fifth but once again Chapman responded as Sam Kennedy scored on an error and Tiana Reeder-Monaghan added on with an RBI-single.

After regaining the lead, Kelly issue a walk in the sixth but retired the other six batters she faced to close the door on the win.

The Panthers take on Occidental in a three-game SCIAC series next week, hosting Saturday's doubleheader at noon.
