Softball drops series with doubleheader split

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team split a doubleheader wit visiting Occidental, falling 8-0 in the early game and winning 3-1 in the late game. The Panthers dropped their first SCIAC series of the season and dropped out of first place in the standings.

Game 1 -L, 8-0

The Panthers committed four errors on defense and left 10 runners on base in the run-rule loss. Chapman's hitters drew eight walks and a hit by pitch for nine free passes but managed just two singles as the Panthers left multiple runners on base in all five innings.

Occidental took advantage of a pair of errors in the opening inning to take a 3-0 lead right out of the gate. The Panthers put two on with no outs in the first and second but failed to cash in any runs.

A bases loaded walk and another two-error inning brought home five more runs – four unearned – as the Tigers jumped out to a big lead. The Panthers once again put runners on first and second with less than two outs but Zada Day-Adams slammed the door for Oxy to clinch the series.

Game 2- W, 3-1

Rose Malen was back to her dominant ways, striking out six consecutive batters between the first and third innings to pick up her seventh win. Malen tossed five strong innings with eight strikeouts and no walks while scattering three singles.

Grace Fosselman jumpstarted the offense with an RBI-triple in the third and an RBI-groundout in the fifth, cashing in Miranda Murphy's one-out triple. Mia Reyes added some insurance with an infield single that brought in a run in the sixth.

Jillian Kelly struck out two in two relief innings to pick up her first save of the season.

The Panthers are back home on Friday to open a three-game SCIAC series with La Verne at 3 p.m.
