Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball falls in pair of one-run losses

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team fell in a pair of one-run losses to No. 18 Cal Lutheran on Saturday. Matt Cristol led several comeback attempts with three game-tying base hits but the Panthers ultimately fell 9-8 and 6-5.

GAME 1 – L, 9-8

In a game that was mostly controlled by Cal Lutheran, the Panthers made a furious eighth inning comeback to provide some late drama before the Kingsmen plated the go-ahead run in the ninth.

Cristol sparked and finished the comeback in the eighth after entering as a pinch hitter. The Kingsmen had methodically built a big lead but saw it disappear with one rally. Three runs in the third gave Cal Lutheran a 3-1 lead and the Kingsmen went on to score a run in five consecutive innings to build an 8-2 lead.

Cristol entered the eighth with a pinch hit solo homer. The rest of the lineup followed in the rally with the next four Panthers reaching safely, capped by Ryan Nopper's walk forcing in a run. Austin Dudas followed with a two-run single to make it 8-6 and Matt Campopiano walked to load the bases once more. With two outs, Cristol came up for his second at-bat of the inning and delivered a two-run single to tie the game up at 8-8.

The Kingsmen were able to end the inning before Chapman could take the lead retook the lead on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Game 2 – L, 6-5 (11 inns.)

Another Cristol-led comeback forced extra innings before the Kingsmen completed the SCIAC series sweep with a home run in the 11th. Despite taking the loss, Jake Fields tossed an efficient 5.2 innings. He struck out one and did not issue a walk while scattering four hits. However, two of the four hits left the yard to fuel the Kingsmen victory.

Cristol had two more game-tying hits. He doubled in the tying run in the seventh to make it 3-3. After a homer regain ed the lead for Cal Lutheran in the eighth, Cristol came through again in the ninth with a single into right to score Brennan Beckley and tie the game at 5-5.

Noah Matsumoto gave Cal Lutheran the 6-5 lead in the 11th with an opposite field home run that bounced off the top of the fence and out. Cristol's infield single put the tying run on base but he was stranded on second as Michael Smith earned the win in relief.

Chapman takes on Occidental in next week's SCIAC series, hosting the Tigers on Friday at 3 p.m. and finishing the series with a doubleheader at Occidental on Saturday.
