ORANGE, Calif.— Chapman baseball (5-15) fell in a double header at home against Middlebury (8-7). Middlebury completed the sweep over Chapman by winning the first game narrowly 7-6 and the second game 10-5. In the first game, Chapman had 10 hits and six runs as a team. First baseman
Matt Campopiano led the way with three hits and two runs.
Chapman jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the second inning of the first game.
Brennan Beckley utilized his speed to steal home, while designated hitter
Brad Lang and
Ryan Nopper also managed to run home on a few base hits.
With momentum on their side early, the Panthers struggled through the top of the third as they committed an error and eventually gave up and additional three runs to Middlebury. That led to an intense and competitive next three innings.
The two Panther teams exchanged runs in the fifth and sixth. Chapman's
Brady Altman,
Joey Capobianco and
Josh Phillips all scored runs. Phillips homered giving the Panthers six runs on the game. But it was too little too late as Middlebury came back in the sixth inning to take a one run lead they would never relinquish.
In the second game, the Panthers struggled to keep the game close.
Brad Lang led the way with three hits, one run and two runs batted in. Phillips, Nopper and Altman all also contributed a hit each. Nopper also earned two runs. But, it was not enough to keep up with Middlebury. Chapman trailed from the second inning on.
The Panthers will look to regain momentum on Tuesday, Mar. 25 against Oberlin at 7:00 P.M.
