ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team powered its way to two run-rule victories in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Pitt-Bradford on Sunday. Chapman won 13-4 and 10-2 to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Panthers hit .491 as a team in the twinbill sweep with four different players recording three hits. Jordan Westerfield was one of those with three hits and drove in six RBIs in the two games.
Game 1 – W, 13-4
The Panthers pulled ahead early and cruised to the victory with two runs in the first and seven more in the second to build a 9-0 lead. After Pitt-Bradford plated a pair of runs in the third, Chapman responded with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Westerfield went 2-for-4 in the early game with four RBIs while Mo Lynch went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run triple. Westerfield drove in runs in the first, second and third innings to lead the offensive surge.
In the circle, Ashley Hester made her return from injury with five solid innings to earn the win. She struck out eight in the five-inning victory and walked just one while allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits.
Game 2 – W, 10-2
The Panthers walked off with a Taylor-made game-clinching single. Taylor Corcoran singled in Taylor Cruz with a base hit up the middle in the sixth inning to push the margin to eight runs.
Chapman again went up early with two in the first, four in the second and one in the third to allow head coach Janet Lloyd to go to the bench as the game progressed. Westerfield singled in both runs in the first inningfor her fifth and sixth RBIs of the day.
Tiana Reeder-Monaghan earned the start and hit her first career home run with a towering solo shot to left field. She scored twice in her three at-bats and also hit a double. In total, the Panthers had 13 hits in the game – 11 of which were singles – and stole six bases.
Cameron Burroughs earned the win in the circle, allowing just two runs on six hits over four and one-third. Jillian Kelly closed out the game by retiring all five batters she faced, striking out four of them.
Chapman is back in action on Thursday against Susquehanna with a doubleheader schedule for 3 p.m.
