Baseball sweeps doubleheader, Laverty wins 300th at Chapman

Henry Chabot tossed a complete game shutout to start the day.

ORANGE, Calif. – Head coach Scott Laverty reached 300 wins at Chapman as the Chapman University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Whittier to clinch a SCIAC series win. The Panthers won 5-0 and 12-2 to take both games of the doubleheader.

Game 1 – W, 5-0

Henry Chabot continued his incredible start to the season with a complete game shutout of the Poets. He struck out nine, walked two and allowed just three hits – all singles – in the dominant outing. He faced just three batters over the minimum.

The Poets could not put anything together against Chabot as Ian Watanabe had the only two hits of the game until a ninth inning single from Sevon Battle. The Poets had just one runner reach second base, advancing on an error, but he was stranded there as Chabot struck out the next batter and got the next to ground out.

Joey Capobianco hit his first career home run – a solo shot in the fifth – for the game's final run. The Panthers scored three times in the first on singles from Capobianco and Matt Campopiano and a groundout from Tommy Golbranson. In the second Austin Dudas brought home Brennan Beckley with an RBI-groundout.

Beckley, Campopiano and Capobianco all had two hits in the game.

Game 2 – W, 12-2

Capobianco again delivered the big hit with a game-clinching two-run single in the eighth to push the lead to 10 runs and end the game in a run-rule. Campopiano and Josh Phillips each had three-RBI games as Phillips hit his fifth homer of the year, increasing his school record to 28 for his career.

Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit with six of those having two hits in the offensive onslaught. The Panthers started hot with six runs in the first two innings and six more in the final two. A five-run second put the Panthers up 6-0 but Whittier rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth – the Poets' only runs of the day. Two in the seventh and four more in the eighth ended the game early for Chapman.

Graham Stogner navigated his way through 7.2 inning despite issuing eight walks. He also struck out nine and allowed just four hits to pick up his first win of the season. Jake Fields tossed the final out of the eighth inning before the offense ended the game early.

Chapman finishes out the series at Whittier tomorrow.
