ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team swept an early Tuesday doubleheader from Haverford, 9-1 and 10-6. With rain in the forecast, the first game began at 9 a.m. and the rain held off long enough for the full doubleheader to be played.
Game 1 – W, 9-1
Jojo Westerfield walked it off with a game-clinching single in the sixth to take the early run-rule victory. Chapman scored one in the first, four in the second, four more in the sixth on the way to the run-rule.
Ilianna Serna drove in three of the Panthers' nine runs when she dropped an RBI-single on the right field line in the first and doubled in two more runs in the sixth. Miranda Murphy walked twice and hit an RBI-triple. She scored all three times she was on base.
The Panthers took advantage of eight walks, three wild pitches and a Haverford error on the way to the win.
Rose Malen had another dominant outing in the circle as she struck out eight and walked one in the six-inning complete game. She scattered five hits and allowed just one run for her third win of the season.
Game 2 – W, 10-6
The Panthers were able to once again able to capitalize on some Haverford mistakes as they plated 10 runs on seven hits. Chapman drew eight walks, including multiple with the bases loaded, and were hit by a couple pitches, Murphy walked twice and went 2-for-2, hitting another triple in the fifth inning.
The Panthers scored in every inning except the fourth and responded every time Haverford cut into the lead. The Panthers opened the scoring with three runs in the first as the inning began with three consecutive walks.
Haverford cut the lead down to one in the second but the Panthers' half of the inning against opened with back-to-back walks. Serna and Westerfield were later hit by pitches in back to back plate appearances to bring home a run and two more scored on an error.
Mia Reyes singled in Murphy in he third while Sam Kennedy tripled in a run in the fifth and later scored on an error to respond to Haverford's two-run homer from Kamaha'o Bode.
Ashley Hester made the start in the circle, tossing 3.2 innings. Jillian Kelly earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 innings. Estrella Perez made her Chapman debut in the circle, facing four batters in the seventh.
Chapman is back in action on Friday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader with No. 2 Case Western Reserve.
