ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team fell twice to visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday to finish off a SCIAC series. The Panthers earned their first win of the season with a 4-1 win over Friday but lost 13-5 and 17-0 on Saturday.
Game 1 – L, 13-5
The Panthers opened the day with an early lead in game one. A three-run second put Chapman out in front, taking advantage of some defensive miscues to plat the initial runs. Both Brennan Beckley and Matt Campopiano knocked in runs with singles
After CMS cut into the lead with a two-run homer, Nick Naccarato answered with a two-run homer of his own in the third to knock out the CMS starter. However, the CMS bullpen combined for 6.2 scoreless innings while the offense took advantage of three hit batters and five walks with 11 unanswered runs on 10 hits over the final six innings.
Game 2 – L, 17-0
The CMS offense stayed hot with two big innings to seal the series victory. The Stags hit two more homers and walked 12 times on top of their 14 hits.
The Panthers host a busy four-game weekend next week with a single game against MIT on Friday at 3 p.m., a doubleheader against UW-LaCrosse on Saturday and another single game against Willamette on Sunday.
