ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team opened the 2025 season with a doubleheader sweep of Austin College on Thursday, 12-2 and 2-1. Jillian Kelly and Rose Malen were dominant in the circle to start the year, combining for 15 strikeouts.
GAME 1 – W, 12-2
Kelly picked up the first win of the year in the circle, striking out five while the offense quickly came to life. After allowing two runs on two hits and an error in the first inning, Kelly settled in. She allowed just one hit over the final four innings while the offense backed her with 12 runs.
Miranda Murphy and Grace Fosselman each collected three hits in the opening game. Murphy also drove in a pair of RBIs while Chill Serna knocked in a pair of RBIs while going 2-for-3 and Morgan Lastinger drove in three RBIs. Mo Lynch also had a pair of RBIs.
The Panthers immediately responded to the Roos with three runs in the first and then sent 10 batters to the plate in the second to plate six runs. The first seven batters of the inning singled to pad the lead and the run-rule margin was clinched with three runs in the third.
GAME 2 – W, 2-1
After an opening game offensive show, the nightcap of the doubleheader boiled down to much more of a pitcher's duel as Malen outdueled Regan Brinkley to clinch the sweep.
Both pitchers cruised through the first two innings. Malen struck out five of the first six batters to start the game and Brinkley retired the first six Panthers in order. Malen went on to strikeout 10 batters, recording double digit strikeouts for the third time in her career.
The Panthers backed Malen with a run-scoring single from Murphy in the third and another RBI-single from Mia Reyes in the fifth. The Roos managed just four hits against Malen but two went for extra bases, including an RBI-double from Tessa Contreras in the fourth.
Reyes broke the 1-1 tie after Samantha Kennedy singled her way on, stole second and moved up to third on a comebacker. Reyes drove a two-out single into left field to score the go-ahead run and Malen tossed a pair of 1-2-3 innings to end the game. She retired the last eight Roos in order.
The Panthers will be back at El Camino next Friday to take on Whittier in an early season SCIAC game.
