ORANGE, Calif. – Annika Carlson had a record-breaking run in the Women's Open race to lead the Chapman University cross country teams at the UCR Invitational on Saturday. Carlson took second in the 5k race while setting the Chapman record in the event. Gavin White paced the men's team in the 8k race.
Carlson's time of 17:36.8 was just six seconds behind the winner as she became the first female Panther to finish a cross country 5k in under 18 minutes. Carlson shattered the record while pacing the women's team to a 15th place finish as a team in a race with dozens of teams and nearly 300 runners.
Brenda Daza was the only other Panther to finish in the top-100 in the race, coming in at 19:04.9 in 88th. As a team, the Panthers averaged a 19:06 – nearly 40 seconds faster than the previous school record.
White was Chapman's top finisher in the Men's Open 8k with a time of 25:49.8 – just seconds off a personal-best. A a team the Panthers finished in 20th while the top-5 runners averaged a 26:42.
Luke Valerio also finished in the top-100 at a time of 26:04.7. He took 89th overall.
Both Panther teams are back in action at the Cougar Challenge in San Marcos, Calif. next Saturday.
