ORANGE, Calif. – Colin Godfrey took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Chapman University baseball team took the series-opener from Occidental, 14-6. The Panthers improved to 14-11 overall and 6-4 in the SCIAC with the win.
Godfrey retired the first 16 batters he faced and the offense came to life in support of his superb effort. The bottom of the order lifted the Panther offense as the six through nine hitters combined to go 7-for-12 with seven RBIs and 12 runs scored.
Josh Phillips was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate but was also walked and hit by a pitch. He stole two bases and scored all five times he was on base. Thomas Golbranson was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and Matt Campopiano was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. Campopiano was intentionally walked twice to load the bases for Ryan Nopper, who drove in four RBIs in his five plate appearances.
Godfrey took a perfect game into the sixth before surrendering a one-out walk. He retired the next two batters to take his no-hitter into the seventh but ran into trouble there. Sancho Llamas led off the seventh with a clean single up the middle and the flood gates broke open for Oxy with five runs on four hits.
The Panthers put up three run in the second and two more in the third to build a 5-0 lead while Godfrey was cruising. The lead increased to 8-0 through six innings by the time Oxy was able to put a run on the board. Chapman responded to Oxy's five-run seventh with three in the bottom half and three more in the eighth.
Matthew Kuromoto shut down the Oxy rally in the seventh and held the Tigers without a hit over the final 2.2 innings. He struck out four, in addition to Godfrey's six strikeouts, while allowing just one run in the ninth.
The Panthers' lineup drew nine walks from four Occidental pitchers and peppered the field with 12 hits.
The series moves to Occidental tomorrow for a doubleheader that is slated to being at 11 a.m.
