Softball splits with Williams

ORANGE, Calif. — Chapman softball split a doubleheader against Williams College, winning game one 3-2 and losing game two 6-1 on Monday, March 25.

Game 1 – W, 3-2

Rose Malen was dominant in the circle as the sophomore took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Chapman leading 1-0 at the time – following a second-inning RBI double from Ella Milante – surrendered the lead as the no-no slipped away.

The Panthers battled back in the bottom of the sixth, however, scoring two runs. Ilianna Serna took back the lead with an RBI triple into the left-center field gap that scored Kristy Kitabayashi — who pinch-ran after a Jojo Westerfield single. The next at-bat, Sam Kennedy, laid down a squeeze bunt. The Ephs couldn't come up with it, and Serna scored the eventual game-winning run.

Cameron Burroughs came on in relief for Chapman in the seventh. Her first career outing in the circle resulted in a three-up-three down frame for the save.

Game 2 – L, 6-1

The Ephs opened the game with four-straight base runners and two runs which proved to be enough as the Panthers bats couldn't get going in game two.

Chapman's lone run came in the first inning after Miranda Murphy, who reached on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch. Westerfield singled her home.

Chapman kept it close through the middle innings as Simi Lauwers finished her outing with four innings pitched and one earned run. Jillian Kelly came on in relief and was fantastic in the fifth and through the first two batters in the sixth, but a solo homer, then a three-spot for the Ephs in the seventh, put the game out of reach.

With the split, the Panthers sit at 9-7 on the season. They will play three games against Redlands this weekend, one on Friday, March 29, on the road and two scheduled for Saturday, March 30, at home.
