ORANGE, Calif. — Chapman baseball picked up their second-straight win in come-from-behind fashion, beating the Tufts Jumbos 6-4 on Wednesday, March 20.
A Trent Turquand two-run blast and Ryan Nopper RBI single capped off a three-run sixth inning for the Panthers, who trailed 4-2 heading into the frame. The Panthers tacked on an insurance run in the eighth via a Tommy Golbranson single.
It began as a pitcher duel with freshman Luke Bradley tossing three innings of one-hit ball. One mistake pitch in the top of the fourth, however, led to a three-run Jumbo homer by Malachi Pena, putting Chapman in a 3-0 hole – Bradley finished his outing with only three hits allowed through five innings with four strikeouts.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the fourth as Nick Naccarato hit a sinking liner into center that dropped just in front of the dive of the Tufts' center fielder, scoring Josh Phillips. An Austin Dudas sacrifice fly in the fifth put Chapman within one.Â
Hank Tobias came on in relief and surrendered a solo shot to Pena to put the Jumbos up two. The bullpen hung tough through the remainder of the game, allowing only one hit from that point forward. Tobias earned the win in two innings of work, and Henry Chabot picked up his fifth save of the season, which didn't come easy as he came on with two runners on and one out in the eighth.
The Panthers return to SCIAC play this weekend as they take on Claremont-M-S in a three-game series. They host the Stags on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
