WHITTIER, Calif. – The season came to a close for the Chapman University women's soccer team after a 2-1 loss at Whittier in the SCIAC Tournament First Round. The Panthers entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed.
The Poets scored a pair of first half goals to take the early advantage and held off the Panthers in the second half to advance to Wednesday's semifinal at Pomona-Pitzer.
Pilar Vanhuesden scored the Panther's only goal when she ran onto a long pass from Casey Gilligan and beat the keeper back across the goal. The Panthers continued to push forward after cutting the lead in half but could not find the equalizer. Bella Ioannou was able to lift a shot on goal but was denied by the Whittier keeper in the 80th minute.
The Panthers outshot the Poets 11-9 in the match but fell to the Poets for the third time this season. With the loss, Chapman ends the season 6-9-2 overall.
